Jukola-2007
Feb 6th, 2007 by speedy
DVOA is sending Team to Jukola 2007.
Jukola is the largest and most famous orienteering relay in the world. Recent versions have attracted close to 1,400 teams with seven men per team. The Venla relay, held at the same time, has attracted 800 teams with four women per team. The events are always held during the summer in Finland.
This year, the event is being held near the town of Lapua.
Some of us thought that sending a team would be a great way to commemorate the 40th anniversary of DVOA. DVOA has regularly been one of the very top clubs every year at the US Relay Championships. While we may not win Jukola, we can do very well, and maybe improve upon CSU’s best-ever US placing of 204 from last year.
A number of people have already expressed interest. So that we can put together the best team possible, we will hold team trials at the Fox Chaser 2-Day A-Event at the Fair Hill on March 30 - April 1, 2007 to select people to go. It is a serious commitment, but it will also be a lot of fun.
Questions:
For general questions, please post on the blog [bos], the DVOA training Yahoo! Group [dvoat], or DVOA E-Board [eboard].
For specific questions, or to join the team, please contact Clem McGrath.
Uniforms:
We care commissioning special, limited-edition uniforms for each athlete on the team, made by Axis Gear (the manufacturer of the regular DVOA suits.) Modified version of these jerseys will be made available to all DVOA members.
Qualifications:
Any male DVOA member can be on the team, but you should be able to comfortably run a red course (even if that is not your normal course.)
The seven legs range from 7.5 km to 15 km and are of advanced difficulty.
If there are four women who want to run, we could also have a Venla team.
Team Trials:
The team trials will be determined by the best finishers on the red or blue courses at Fair Hill of the people who ask to be considered. (To get on the list, email Clem McGrath.) If you normally run red or blue, run your regular A category course; if you don’t, but want to be on the team, we must ask that you run red.
They will be determined by highest placings for the two day event.
There will be two discretionary slots for people who may not be able to attend the trials or who believe they may not have performed according to their abilities. These slots will be determined by the team coach.
